Performance & Troubleshooting
Free, open source, and yours to use
Is Krita really free?
Yes. Krita is completely free and open source software licensed under the GNU General Public License v3. There are no subscriptions, no trial periods, no premium tiers, and no feature paywalls. You can download, use, modify, and distribute Krita according to the GPL terms.
Can I use Krita for commercial work?
Absolutely. Krita is free for personal, educational, and commercial use. Artwork you create with Krita belongs entirely to you. There are no royalties, licensing fees, or attribution requirements for the artwork you produce, though contributing to the development fund is appreciated.
Who owns Krita?
Krita is a public project owned by its contributors, managed by the Krita Foundation in collaboration with KDE. It is not owned by a corporation. Development is supported by community volunteers, donations, and the development fund.
What platforms does Krita support?
Krita runs on Windows (8.1 and later), macOS, Linux (via AppImage or distribution packages), and Android (including ChromeOS). Nightly builds are also available for testing upcoming features. See our Download page for platform-specific packages.
Security & Downloads
Safe installs and verified files
Is Krita safe to download?
Yes. Krita installers have passed comprehensive security scans with a 100/100 clean score. Results confirm the software is virus free, spyware free, and malware free. Always download from official sources and verify SHA256 checksums to ensure file integrity. See our Trust & Security page for full details.
Why does my antivirus flag Krita as suspicious?
This is a known false positive affecting many open source applications. Antivirus heuristics sometimes flag legitimate binaries that are less commonly distributed or not yet whitelisted. Krita is not malware. Verify your download checksum, add Krita to your antivirus exclusion list, and consult our antivirus guide for step-by-step resolution.
How do I verify my download is authentic?
After downloading, compute the SHA256 hash of the file using your operating system's tools and compare it to the published checksum on our Download page. On Windows, check the Digital Signatures tab in file Properties. Matching checksums and valid signatures confirm authenticity.
Does Krita collect personal data or telemetry?
No. Krita does not include hidden telemetry, data collection, or tracking mechanisms. As open source software, this can be independently verified by reviewing the source code. Your artwork and usage remain entirely private on your local machine.
Features & Usage
Tools, formats, and creative workflows
Can Krita replace Adobe Photoshop?
For digital painting, illustration, comics, concept art, and animation, Krita provides professional-grade tools that many artists use as their primary software. It excels at brush-based workflows, layer compositing, and animation. Photo editing and certain design workflows may still favor Photoshop, but for painting-focused work Krita is a powerful free alternative.
Is Krita good for beginners?
Krita is great for both new and experienced artists. The sheer number of tools can feel overwhelming at first, creating a steeper learning curve compared to simpler programs. Start with basic brushes, enable the stabilizer, and explore one feature at a time. The supportive community provides tutorials and feedback for learners at every level.
Does Krita support animation?
Yes. Krita includes a full animation suite with frame-by-frame timeline, onion skinning, and export to WebM, GIF, and image sequences. The animation docker and timeline work together for efficient frame management. See our animation guide for workflow tips.
What file formats does Krita support?
Krita natively uses the .kra format which preserves all layers and metadata. It also opens and saves PSD, PNG, JPEG, TIFF, BMP, GIF, WebP, and more. CMYK and high bit-depth workflows are supported for professional print production. Import and export filters handle most industry-standard formats.
Can I install plugins and custom brushes?
Yes. Krita supports Python plugins, G'MIC filters, and community resource bundles including brushes, patterns, textures, and page templates. Import bundles via Settings, Manage Resources. See our plugin installation guide for detailed steps.
Performance & Troubleshooting
Speed tips and quick fixes
Why is Krita slow or laggy on my system?
Performance issues typically occur with very large canvases and many layers, which can be demanding on system resources. Enable GPU acceleration, increase RAM allocation in settings, merge finished layers, and work at lower resolution during sketching phases. See our performance guide for detailed optimization steps.
What are the system requirements?
Krita runs on Windows 8.1+, recent macOS versions, modern Linux distributions, and Android tablets. A graphics tablet is recommended for painting workflows. For large canvases with many layers, 8 GB RAM minimum with 16 GB recommended, plus a dedicated GPU with updated drivers for optimal performance.
My tablet pressure sensitivity is not working. What should I do?
Open Settings, Tablet Settings, and try switching between WinTab and Windows Ink input methods. Ensure your tablet driver is up to date. Test pressure in the brush editor curve settings. On Linux, verify your tablet is recognized by the system before launching Krita. See our brush setup guide.
Which version should I download?
Most users should download the latest stable release, currently Krita 5.3.2.1. This is a bugfix release addressing layer docker issues from 5.3.2. Nightly builds are available for testers who want early access to development features but may be less stable. Visit our Download page for all options.
